Listserv Message: October 6

Hello, everyone!

I hope you're all doing well, in the midst of midterm exams. We have quite a few different updates for you this week, and just as a reminder, you can always check our website (cpeg.weebly.com) for more club updates, ideas, and plans. A short summary of the topics we covered in today's meeting:
1. Stream Clean-Up
2. Conservation Stickers
3. Location Change
4. Meeting
5. Movie
6. Potluck Picnic
7. Semester Events
8. Plans for the Semester
9. Single Stream Recycling

1. Stream Clean-Up. We're planning on organizing a local stream clean-up, and we'd like your help! If you can fill out our poll here to show when you would be available to clean-up our campus community! Ignore the specific dates listed. Rather, enter your general availability for that day of the week. We'll plan at least one clean-up for this semester, maybe more, depending on everyone's schedules and availability.

2. Conservation Stickers. One thing we talked about at the meeting is getting stickers that talk about turning lights off. We can order stickers from here for free. There is a pdf request form on the site, to get 25 of the "Please Turn Lights Off" stickers. To get them, you mail the form with a self-addressed envelope as directed. (So, technically, it's $0.88 for the two letters, rather than being completely free). If you have a few moments and are interested, you can do this, and then bring the stickers to one of the meetings once you receive them.

3. Location Change. For the rest of the semester, we will be meeting in 2206 JMZ (Jimenez Hall). If you enter the main doors of the building, walk straight, through the double doors to the back wing of the building. Turn right (you'll see the computer lab straight ahead), go down the hallway, then take the stairs on your left up one flight. The room will be on your left. If you need any more specific instructions (or if that just made no sense to you), let us know.

4. Meeting. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 13, at 8pm in 2206 JMZ. We'll discuss recycling awareness, energy conservation, upcoming events, and selecting which movies we'll watch at the last two movie dates of the semester, among other things.

5. Movie. Speaking of movies, our next movie night is on Wednesday, October 20, at 8pm in 2206 JMZ. We'll be watching Food, Inc. You can see a trailer here. About the film: In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

6. Potluck Picnic. We'll be having a potluck picnic at the Wooded Hillock on Saturday, October 23, at 3pm. What is the Wooded Hillock? You can find information about it here. We'll be meeting at 3pm at the tables in front of the ERC (Eppley Recreation Center). Since this is a potluck, bring some food to share! We're estimating about 10-15 people might attend, so keep that in mind. If you know for sure that you're planning on coming, you can send us an e-mail ([email protected]) and let us know so we have an idea of how many people will come and who we should wait for before heading over. It might be a bit chilly near the end of October, so make sure to dress warmly for an outdoors picnic!

7. Semester Events. Other upcoming events for the semester are listed on our website. This includes meetings, movie nights, hiking trips, the picnic, etc. You can find a list of these events on the "Get Involved!" page.

8. Plans for the Semester. In general terms, some plans we have for the semester include: chalking (with general information and helpful eco-reminders), improving recycling/composting awareness with students on campus, working to reduce energy usage caused by lights, air conditioners, etc. left on overnight, and more!

9. Single Stream Recycling. In case anyone is not currently aware, as of Monday, the campus has converted to single stream recycling in academic and administrative buildings (residence halls will still continue to have separate bins). This means that all recyclable materials can go into one bin. As far as what can be recycled, the following materials can all go into the bins: paper (newspaper, magazines, computer paper), cardboard (cereal boxes, frozen food packaging, etc.), books (paperback, textbooks, hardback, phonebooks; although, who is actually going to put a textbook in the recycling bin?), waxed cartons (milk and juice cartons), plastic containers (#1-7 bottles, jugs, trays, etc.; you don't need to remove the caps from plastic bottles, they can be recycled together), plastic bags/film (if they're all contained within one bag, you can put them in!), aluminum (cans, containers, foil (balled up), pie pans, etc.), steel/tin cans (soup cans, fruit cans, etc.), glass (jars and bottles).

If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to let me know!
